Answering service pricing in 2026 runs from about $29 a month for an entry AI plan to $1,700 or more a month for a human receptionist plan with a few hundred minutes. Human services charge per minute or per call inside a monthly bundle, roughly $7 to $12 per call once you divide it out, while AI answering services charge per minute of talk time at a fraction of that. What you actually pay depends less on the sticker price than on your call volume, your average call length and what the overage rate is.
Many owners pick the cheapest plan, then find the invoice doubled because the minutes ran out in week three. This guide explains how answering service cost is actually built, shows what six vendors publish on their own pricing pages, and works the math for a small business at three call volumes so you can estimate your own bill before you talk to sales.
Prices checked on the vendors' own websites on October 21, 2026.
How answering service pricing works: the six models
Almost every plan is a mix of the same building blocks. Once you can name them, comparing quotes gets much easier.
Per minute inside a monthly bundle. You buy a block of minutes (say 200 a month) for a flat fee. This is the most common model for human virtual receptionist services. The questions to ask: how is a minute counted, is time rounded up per call, and does after-call work (writing up the message, sending the email) count? Some services bill the full handling time, not only the time the caller is on the line.
Per call inside a monthly bundle. You buy a number of calls rather than minutes. It favors long intake calls and penalizes lots of short "are you open" questions.
Overage. What you pay once the bundle is used up. On human plans overage is often charged at a higher effective rate than the bundle itself, which is why a plan that fits a quiet month can be expensive in a busy one. Always ask for the overage rate in writing.
Setup and onboarding fees. A one-time charge to build your script and account.
After-hours, weekend and holiday surcharges. Older call centers sometimes charge more for nights or holidays. Most vendors we checked say 24/7 coverage is included; confirm it in the contract.
Add-ons. This is where human answering service pricing quietly grows: appointment booking, call recording, a Spanish line, text notifications, extra transfer destinations and CRM integrations can each be a per-call or per-month charge.
AI per-minute usage. AI answering services usually charge a monthly plan with included minutes and then a flat per-minute rate, sometimes billed by the second. With no staff behind a busy hour, the rate is far lower than a human minute.
What does an answering service cost? Real 2026 vendor prices
Only numbers published on each vendor's own pricing page are listed; gaps are marked.
| Vendor | Type | Entry plan | Larger plans | Overage | Setup fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ruby | Human virtual receptionists | $250 per month, 50 minutes | $395 for 100 min, $720 for 200 min, $1,725 for 500 min | Not published | Page says no setup or onboarding fees |
| Smith.ai | Per call receptionist plans | $300 per month, 30 calls | $810 for 90 calls, $2,100 for 300 calls | $11.50 to $8.50 per call | Page says no setup fees |
| Abby Connect | Human, with AI minutes at half rate | $164 per month, 50 Abby Minutes | $329 for 100, $599 for 200, $1,380 for 500 | Billed at your plan's minute rate | None listed |
| Dialzara | AI receptionist | $29 per month, 60 minutes | $99 for 220 min, $199 for 500 min, $349 for 1,000 min | $0.48 to $0.35 per minute | None |
| Goodcall | AI agent, billed per unique caller | $79 per month, 100 customers | $129 for 500, $299 for 2,000 | 79, 26 or 15 cents per extra customer | Not listed |
| Rosie | AI receptionist | $49 per month, 250 minutes | $149 for 1,000 min, $299 for 2,000 min | Not published | Not listed |
A few details that change the math. Smith.ai lists appointment booking at $1.50 per call, call recording and transcription at $0.25 per call and a dedicated Spanish line at $1.00 per call as add-ons, and takes 10% off for a 12 month subscription. Abby Connect counts one AI minute as half an Abby Minute, so the same plan covers twice as much AI-answered time, and says there is no weekend upcharge. Ruby says 24/7 coverage including holidays is part of its plans. Dialzara includes its SMS agent free with a voice plan, and Rosie offers two months free on annual billing.
AnswerConnect, another well known human service, does not publish prices: its pricing page is a quote form. Its site says plans are chosen by expected minutes and that billing counts the total time spent handling each call, including after-call message-taking, which is worth factoring in when you compare quotes.
How much does an answering service cost at your call volume?
Answering service pricing is hard to compare on sticker prices alone because one vendor sells minutes, another calls and another unique customers. The fairest way is to pick a volume and price it everywhere. The example below assumes a small service business averaging three minutes per call, using only published prices and no add-ons.
- Quiet: 100 calls a month, about 300 minutes.
- Typical: 300 calls a month, about 900 minutes.
- Busy: 600 calls a month, about 1,800 minutes.
| Monthly cost (published prices) | 100 calls / 300 min | 300 calls / 900 min | 600 calls / 1,800 min |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smith.ai (per call) | $915 (Basic plus 10 overage calls) | $2,100 (Pro) | $4,650 (Pro plus 300 overage calls) |
| Ruby (human minutes) | $1,725 (500 minute plan) | Above largest published plan | Above largest published plan |
| Abby Connect, human minutes | $1,380 (500 minute plan) | Above largest published plan | Above largest published plan |
| Abby Connect, AI minutes | $599 (300 AI min = 150 Abby Minutes) | $1,380 (900 AI min = 450 Abby Minutes) | Above largest published plan |
| Dialzara (AI) | $199 | $349 | $629 ($349 plus 800 min at $0.35) |
| Rosie (AI) | $149 | $149 | $299 |
| LumisReach Receptionist (AI) | $295 | $375 ($295 plus 400 min at $0.20) | $555 ($295 plus 1,300 min at $0.20) |
Three things stand out. First, human services get expensive quickly once you pass a few hundred calls, because every call needs a paid person on it. Second, the cheapest AI plans are genuinely cheap for simple message-taking; if that is all you need, Rosie or Dialzara will do it for less. Third, the overage rate matters more than the entry price: at 1,800 minutes, a $0.35 per minute overage costs more than a $0.20 one even though the starting plan was lower.
What the table does not show is what you get per call. If you add Smith.ai's $1.50 booking add-on to 300 calls, that is another $450 a month. If an AI plan only takes messages, you still pay someone to call every caller back. Price the outcome you want (a booked job, a screened lead), not just the answered call.
Virtual receptionist pricing vs AI receptionist cost
Virtual receptionist pricing (human) pays for a trained person's time, which is why it is quoted per minute or per call and why after-call work can count. You are buying judgment and a human voice, which is worth it where a person on every call is the brand.
AI receptionist cost pays for compute. The service answers on the first ring, takes many calls at once and costs roughly the same at 2am as at 2pm. The better AI services also book onto your real calendar and text a confirmation, which is the part that turns an answered call into revenue. Our guide to virtual receptionist vs AI receptionist covers the trade-off in more depth.
An in-house receptionist costs salary, payroll taxes and benefits, and covers no nights or weekends. They win when the role includes walk-ins and office work, and lose when calls arrive after 5pm or three at a time.
How to estimate your own answering service cost
- Pull last month's call log from your phone provider and count inbound calls, not just answered ones.
- Find your average call length. Most carriers show it; if not, time ten calls.
- Split calls by hour. Note how many land after hours, on weekends and during your busiest hour.
- Decide the job. Message-taking only, or booking, transfers and follow-up texts too.
- Price your volume at each vendor, including the overage rate and every add-on you need.
- Add 30% for your busy season and price that month too, because that is the invoice that surprises people.
- Compare cost per booked job, not cost per answered call.
What LumisReach costs
The LumisReach Call Receptionist answers on the first ring, 24/7, on many calls at once. It is built from your price list, service area, hours and policies, books onto Google Calendar, Outlook, Apple Calendar, Cal.com or NexHealth against live availability, warm-transfers urgent calls with a spoken summary and texts the caller a confirmation before they hang up.
Usage is published on the pricing page: AI voice is $0.20 per minute, billed by the second, SMS is $0.012 per segment, and there are no setup fees. The Receptionist plan is $295 per month with 500 voice minutes, a shared team inbox and a CRM included, with two months free on annual billing. You can start for $20, which covers a working phone number, $10 of voice credits and 14 days of full access.
Where we are not the cheapest: for pure message-taking at low volume, the entry AI plans above cost less. Where we are not the right fit: if your policy is a human voice on every call, a staffed service is the better buy. If you are choosing between providers, our ranking of the best answering service for small business compares human and AI options side by side, and the after-hours answering service guide covers night and weekend rules. Frequently asked questions
How much does an answering service cost per month?
Based on prices published in October 2026, AI answering services start between $29 and $79 a month, and human virtual receptionist services start between $164 and $300 a month for 30 to 50 calls or minutes. A small business with 300 calls a month should expect a few hundred dollars on an AI service and around $2,000 a month on a per-call human plan, before add-ons.
Is answering service pricing per minute or per call?
Both exist. Ruby and Abby Connect sell minutes, Smith.ai sells calls, Goodcall bills per unique caller, and most AI services sell minutes with a per-minute overage. Per call favors long calls; per minute favors short ones. Ask how minutes are rounded and whether after-call work counts.
Are there setup fees for answering services?
Most of the vendors we checked advertise no setup fee, including Ruby, Smith.ai, Abby Connect, Dialzara and LumisReach. Some services still charge one, so confirm it in writing along with the overage rate.
Do answering services charge more after hours?
Some older call centers do, but the vendors we checked say 24/7 coverage is included, and Abby Connect states there is no weekend upcharge. AI answering services generally charge the same rate at any hour because there is no night shift to staff.
How much does an AI receptionist cost?
Entry AI receptionist plans ranged from $29 to $79 a month in October 2026, with overage between $0.20 and $0.48 per minute where published. LumisReach bills AI voice at $0.20 per minute by the second after included minutes, with the Receptionist plan at $295 a month for 500 minutes, and you can start for $20.
Is an AI answering service cheaper than a human one?
At the same call volume, usually yes, often by several times, because a human service pays a person for every call. A human service can still be worth the premium when a human voice on every call is part of how you sell. Many businesses split it: AI for after hours and overflow, people for the rest.
What hidden costs should I look for?
Overage rates, minute rounding, after-call work counted as billable time, and per-call add-ons such as booking, recording, Spanish handling and text notifications. Price your busiest month, not your average one, and compare cost per booked job rather than cost per call.
